The Experience of Alcohol Use and the Recognition of Alcohol Consumption among the Female Students in Middle Schools

|
This study investigated the recognition of alcohol use and drinking behaviors of female students in middle schools. The participants were 1,638 female students who were studying at 12 middle schools, whose ages ranged from 12 to 20 (M=13.77, SD=.97). Knowledge of alcohol effects, positive and negative attitudes toward alcohol use, and intention to abstention were measured as the recognition of alcohol use in this study. There was no significant gender difference in experience of drinking alcohol beverages. The upper grades reported more experience of drinking alcohol beverages than the lower grades of female students in middle schools. Results indicated that the upper grades showed lower level of the knowledge of alcohol effects, more positive attitudes and less negative attitudes toward alcohol use, and less intention to abstention than the lower grades. Female students with drinking experience assessed lower rate of non-drinking middle school students and higher rate of problematic drinkers in middle school than female students without drinking experience. Female students with drinking experience showed lower level of the knowledge of alcohol effects, more positive attitudes and less negative attitudes toward alcohol use, and less intention to abstention than female students without drinking experience. It was discussed the results of this study with previous studies, cognitive dissonance theory, and concept of false consensus effect in self-serving attribution bias.
